Matthew Alexis creates sculptural paintings using acrylic paint to literally build structure as three-dimensional works presented in the traditional two-dimensional painting format. His canvases have depth, volume, and a distinct physical presence that immediately arrests the viewer. Although i would characterize his paintings as abstract, they allude to cellular organics communicating the symbiotic relationships of quantum spaces.
Alexis’s web presentation is clean and does not overpower his work. His web space is about the work, no frills, with a focus on images. Even though it is a bit gimmicky i enjoy the small thumbnails of larger pieces. It gives the website a bit of playful mystery and provides and comes off as an interactive tool. It forces the viewer to investigate his space.
Art and Fear Response

If it is true that 98% of art students will no longer create art after five years out of school it seems logical to question the role that school plays in cultivating the minds of young artists. It is entirely possible that what the author describes as a lack of “any continuing support system [post school]” misses the mark all together. Any artist, in todays market, holds and incredible amount of debt in relation to his or her market value. If the government were to investigate this “dropout rate” i would speculate the reasons for quitting were not related to creative enthusiasm or drive to create but instead are rooted in the real life need to pay rent. “Real” life and debt could put someones creative candle out very quickly.
